Inviting young entrepeneurs

Our yearly used book sale will be held June 12, a Saturday, at the spacious Camp Jordan Arena in East Ridge.

This is a great opportunity for homeschooling entrepreneurs to showcase their products to a large group of people. Young business people (children not yet graduated) will be allowed to set up at the individual price. Come on in, kids, and show us what you can sell.

Mom or dad also sell for no more than the admission price.

Businesses are welcome at the event for a $30 fee.

Saturday, June 12 schedule

Sellers 8 a.m.

Buyers 9 a.m.

Sale ends at 1 p.m. we must be out of the building by 2.

Gary Hargraves will help set up at 7 a.m. Can you or a son volunteer to come in early to help?

On March 19 and 20 the CSTHEA mock trial team participated in the Tennessee mock trial competition in Nashville. The team consisted of Amanda Paul, Vivian Hughbanks, Abigail Till, Brittany Kanerva, Caitlyn Sudkamp, David Tulis and Seth Jones.

They were coached by Jeff Atherton and Scott Maucere.

Over the course of the two-day competition they competed against four teams — Tulluhoma High School, South Greene High School, St. Maryʼs Episcopal and Springfield High School from around the state.

This competition brought out the skills the team had acquired over four months of practice and the regional competition, in which they had placed first. They were challenged as their knowledge and presentation of the case material was put to the test.

Each member of the team performed exceptionally well under the pressure.

At the end of the competition, Vivian Hughbanks was voted the most valued player of the team. Their hard work and dedication payed off, as they were awarded 6th place overall in the competition. Five of the seven members of the team will be returning next year; we can only imagine what the future will hold.

On Dec. 5 three homeschool teams represented Chattanooga at the Tennessee first Lego League Tournament in Cookeville.

The competitions lasted almost eight hours, with a break for lunch. Each team competed in three rounds of robot performance and then made a presentation on their research on local transportation problems. They were then interviewed on robot design, robot programming, teamwork and leadership, and then competitively rated against each of the 48 registered teams at the event. The Chattanooga homeschool teams brought home more trophies than ever before!

The East Brainerd Hurricanes led by Shayne Champion earned third place in research and presentation with their project titled "Safety for Bicyclists". Team Terastorm led by Jeffrey Cross won fourth place for robot performance (with 280 points) and the third place champion award for overall performance.
Although cold weather has set in around Chattanooga, area homeschool dads have enjoyed the warmth obtained from good fellowship, strength and encouragement during the Friday meetings at Panera Bread Co. in Hixson.

The meetings have been relaxed and easygoing with an abundance of stimulating topics. At each gathering, we have been blessed with a bond which has equipped us to do battle in a culture continually attempting to confuse what it means to be a Christian, leader, servant, husband, father and friend.

There have been a great many topics exchanged at our meetings:

❏ We have discussed how to prepare our sons to be skilled and sufficient, as they will one day provide for their families.
❏ We have exhorted each other with ways to handle our little girls growing up and the changing complexities, which accompany that process.
❏ We have talked through developments we have seen in our country and what potential implications those changes may have on our jobs, our families and our homeschools.
❏ We have shared prayer requests for ourselves and loved ones and felt the calm assurances, which come from the knowledge that those prayers are being lifted up to a sovereign God.

The informal gatherings have been much more than a meet and greet. They have provided a connection, a place where paths cross, ideas exchange and the value of friendship learned.

So plan to come out and join us, Fridays 6:45 a.m. as we equip each other to be better men.

Chris Davis has supplied the following sample of topics we have discussed:

Prayer requests

Homeschool laws / concerns / events

Theology / reformed doctrine / good books

Leadership (as a husband and father) / multigenerational legacy

Culture / worldview / cultural shift / abortion / media / Christian colonization

Darwin and evolution

History / Christian roots / various political current events / socialism

Entrepreneurship

Square-foot gardening

Hunting / guns / camping / Boy Scouts

Appleseed [marksmanship] Project

Courtship vs. dating

Sports / homeschool teams

Contact James at jehind@gmail.com.
